Earth Star Creations

EarthStar Creations is the artistic enterprise of Cowichan Valley artists Bett Cox and Cathie Franklin started in 2001. The product line of this female-run company is diverse, yet carries many similar themes and attitudes to life and living. Bett joined the Imagine That! Artisans’ co-op in the spring of 2007. The shop was one of the first she visited when she moved to Duncan. The quality and craftsmanship of the work carried by the co-op impressed her immensely. Now being part of the fold, this fabric creatress constantly finds herself challenged and inspired by her peers to take her creations to the next level.

Bett sews colourful and creative wall hangings that brighten any space. She also makes EarthStar’s signature Spirit lap quilts, with images to soften the heart and the soul. These are great to cozy up under or to use for meditation and personal wellness practices. Cathie assists this creative endeavor by helping choose the fabrics and colours, as well as having input into on the designs. Cathie has worked in stain glass, folk art and oil painting over the past few years. She has found that she has an aptitude for working with colour resulting in a complimentary working relationship with Bett and her fabric arts.

An assortment of colourful, cloth bags are also always available from EarthStar. Whether you are looking for a light travel purse or a sturdy shopping bag, there are many to choose from. These bags are made to be durable, to ensure they last a long, long time. Using cloth bags in daily shopping is much more fun and reduces the number of plastic shopping bags going into the local landfill. You get to love the earth while you shop!

It has always been important to Bett to work at a grassroots level. Bett was originally trained as a photographer and has been involved in farmers’ and art markets since the 1970’s. Both EarthStar women work intentionally with the principles of positive energy and consciously put that energy into their work. Bett notes that Mother Earth and Mother Nature are the main inspirations for the women who run this company. She says, “There is so much focus on the violence, corruption and negativity in our world and not enough on the positive. One of the purposes of EarthStar Creations is to help spread the positive light energy to all those that inhabit this planet of ours. One way for us to do this is to create spirit lap quilts, wall hangings, and even bags that make people feel good, give them comfort and will hopefully put a smile on their face and joy in their hearts.”

Come visit Bett and her work at Imagine That! Artisan Co-op located in Downtown Duncan.
